I was just looking at your post count, so I apoligize if this is overly simple or if it's all stuff you already know, but I thought I'd say what I knew.
It's a loaded question. Gentoo, being a distro, is most similar to gentoo.
In terms of ideology, it's probably somewhere between slackware, debian and FreeBSD. It has a focus on power and flexibility far above ease of use, and a focus on flexibility and customization as opposed to pretty much anything working out of the box.
Basic idea of gentoo is that everything is compiled from source using the emerge/portage system, which allows for somewhat automatic resolution of dependencies for compiling, as well as USE flags, basically, flags which at compile time allow you to include or omit certain features of the program. Installation is a fun bit of difficulty... basically you boot from a live cd which has an xfce environment and a working version of gcc, and use the OS in ram to compile and install the kernel and the basic system files.
Gentoo's systems are based widely off of the Ports system from BSD.
Gentoo is not comparable with most other distros.
Maybe a little with LFS. As you also compile all from source there. But gentoo has supreme package management, ...
