VBOX Gentoo Host Additions Mouse Issues

I followed the instructions http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Virtualbox_Gentoo_as_Guest to set up Gentoo in a virtual machine on my Vista box. I also installed the virtualbox-guest-additions package. However, this notifies me on boot (added to the default run level) that it failed to start. However.... the seemless mouse works (my cursor changes!).

I problem is that I cannot copy and paste in and out of the guest and host. Nor (more importantly) can Drag and Drop (and similar tasks such as highlighting). The mouse vanishes and my windows don't move!

Any ideas?

(First Gentoo install)
