should i try to install from stage 1?

i've already made a stage 3 install, and i was wondering if i should try installing from a stage 1 tarball, just for fun, and to try and understand linux a bit better.
so my questions are, what are the main differences? is it extremely hard? are there any old docs i can find about this?
thanks!

I would suggest giving a standard arch install a run before doing a stage1 gentoo install. Both distributions take a different approach to things and it'll give you a broader understanding of methodology and exposure to another interesting system and package manager.

They're both good tasks to perform and well documented, so it's just a matter of being able to follow directions and understand exactly what you're doing.

Good luck which ever path you choose, it's an endeavor well worth your time.

thanks a lot for the advice, i hadn't installed arch because i was worried that it would end up being the same as a stage3 gentoo, and since i already have one of those... well.
anyway, i'm downloading arch right now, hopefully it'll be a fun install (gentoo was pretty damn entertaining, even though it was hard).

Right now, can you post this :

Code:
# emerge --info
# cat /proc/cpuinfo
Maybe we can tweak your installation a bit.

What is the difference between a stage 1 install and just rebuilding everything after doing a stage 3?

The only diff that I see, is that you actually run a .sh script and after that you endup with a Stage 2.

if this is your first install, it is best to do a stage three, and once you figure out what use flags and other make.conf settings you want to go with - just emerge world -unD and it will rebuild anything that needs to be recompiled.
