Python Portage API

I recall reading somewhere that there is a Portage API for Python, yet I cannot find any documentation on it. I'm working on an auto-update script for my server, and would love to use an API to run emerge rather than calling it from the command line and parsing the output.

Does anyone know if this API even exists, and if so, is there any documentation on it?

Thank you.

You can see what files are included by the portage package and then use pydoc to read the documentation for all the python interfaces of portage. They are daunting though so don't get frustrated too quickly.

Code:
pydoc portage
That should get you started.
