New to Gentoo and installing on machine with no OS. When unpacking stage 3 tarball get lots of failure to establish symbolic and hard links stating no permissions. Ends with failure status. In the correct directory /mnt/gentoo, partition is mounted with ext4, no shortage of RAM. Many threads on this out there, none touching on this specific problem.
You need root permissions to write to many places. I would start again from tarball #1 as root. These permission errors probably happened before. Either become root (su root & enter password) or add 'sudo' at the start of any root command e.g. 'sudo tar <options>'
