Keyboard and mouse don't work after typing "startx",

I've been through quite a trial trying to get Gentoo up and running, took me a little over a day because I had to redo everything twice due to messing something up the first time. But I have at least gotten it booting under its own power into console mode.

So now, I'm trying to get a basic X session with the default twm and three xterms working. It actually boots up, I see all three xterms and the clock in the corner, but the keyboard and mouse lock up hard and won't let me do anything, not even switch to another terminal using Alt-Ctrl-F2 or something. There is a cursor onscreen, but it won't move.

I end up having to login remotely (thankfully I have sshd setup), and reboot the machine. I can't even find xinit in the process list to kill it and get my console back, so rebooting is all I can do.

I keep hearing talk of enabling something called evdev, but it seems like the kernel I compiled already had the relevant option enabled. I also have the full HID devices enabled.

Following this page:

https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Evdev

I added INPUT_DEVICES="evdev" to /etc/portage/make.conf, and did the emerge --ask --changed-use --deep @world command, as well as copying 10-evdev.conf to the location specified.

Nothing seems to work. I'm at a loss as to what to do in this situation, because I'm experienced at solving VIDEO problems with X, but I've never had issues with basic input devices before.

Hya

I am not a gentoo user.

When I had similar situation with debian, log file had some sort of information. (missing driver or whatever)
You can check it through ssh login.

cheers

Thanks, I managed to get the log file over SSH.

Most of it is rather boring, but at the end, there seems to be a failed attempt to load evdev as a module. I don't get why it's trying to load a module, because I compiled Event Interface and USB Human Interface device (full HID) support directly into my kernel. Is this one of those things where it needs to be a module?

Okay, I figured it out after searching for Failed to load module "evdev" (module does not exist, 0).

I ended up here, and noticed that the OP had tried installing a package called "xf86-input-evdev". This gave me the idea that it wasn't trying to load a kernel module, but rather some other kind of driver/module that's specific to X.

So I just ran emerge xf86-input-evdev, and then tried startx again. Now everything works.

Thanks for reminding me of the log file... I usually manage to get back to the console and see the output there, so I rarely have to actually use the log file.
