When I try to install the stage three tar ball (links http://www.gentoo.org/main/en/mirrors.xml) i can't figure out how to select a mirror. I tried with a live DVD (really the changing wall paper is distracting) and a minimal. How does one go about selecting a mirror arrow keys do not work.
The page you linked to has all the links to the mirrors that are currently available for Gentoo (well, the official ones, there may be unofficial mirrors). As I see you are in Germany, so chhose one of the links in the Germany section, right click on it and copy the URL. You now have an URL that points to a Gentoo distfiles mirror, use that URL in your make.conf.
I for example use
OK...soo I got a base gentoo system built and I'm compiling x right now in chroot because there is no automagic detecting of eth0 so I can't install from the install itself. It's been an interesting couple hours
