ati driver issues and X 1.6.5

Because I have a laptop with an ATI card I have to deal with ATI's failure to support their own hardware. As such I cannot emerge the latest X 1.7 as my mobility radeon x1300 isn't supported.

So I followed a guide which basically listed packages to mask with versions so I could downgrade X to 1.6.5 and keep related packages at particular versions (not the latest).

I run slim as my desktop manager which has always ran great. When I try to run fluxbox or ANY desktop for that matter X dies. xorg.conf is using Driver = "radeon" which is of the package xf86-video-ati and I've eselected opengl to x11. I cannot use the closed source driver because it doesn't support cards made more than 5 minutes ago.

Here is a snippet of the FAIL log.

Code:
/usr/bin/xauth: creating new authority file /var/run/slim.auth

Really not sure I follow. If you are using the radeon driver (xf86-video-ati) then you can certainly use X server 1.7.* and higher. We really need to see the full log file to figure out why X isn't working for you.

I see. I've since unmasked the packages and allowed a full emerge deep update and am now using X 1.7. Here is the error I get now (btw when slim loads it freezes solid but I can ssh from another box).

Errors from xkbcomp are not fatal to the X server
Thanks for any help!

Well that's still not the full /var/log/Xorg.0.log file. The error does point out, however, that your evdev input module is compiled for the older Xserver. You'll want to re-emerge it against and then try X again. Then show us the full /var/log/Xorg.0.log file if you are still having problems,

Thanks for that input. I've since recompiled evdev and now slim no longer freezes when it loads. However X still fails to start. Below is the Xorg.0.log in a pastebin link as its too large apparently for a post.

http://pastebin.org/157381

Again thanks for your help.

Well your synaptics driver is also compiled for the wrong version X server. Other than that, I'm not seeing anything that shows X crashing or failing to start. If slim is starting up, then clearly X is starting. I'd guess that there something wrong with slim or you're somehow selecting an X session that you don't have properly installed or configured.

You could always try simply running 'xinit /usr/bin/flubox' (or some other window manager that you know you have installed) from a console to see if that works.

Thanks again. I've rebuilt the x86-input-synaptics drivers and now I can run xinit startfluxbox and it works! For some reason I can't run anything though (something about cannot find display or make sure another window manager isn't running). I can't seem to get it working via slim which I think means that I have some kind of XSession issue. I did hear something about a change in the way XSession works.

I will have to investigate how XSessions work now ;/

Always recompile all your xf86-* packages when installing a new xorg-server version.
