Hi! I'm a new gentoo user. I followed this guide to build modules and recompiled the kernel and emerged alsa-utils and alsa-lib, however the modules fail to load at startup. It says
Code:
FATAL: Error inserting snd_mixer_oss Unknown symbol in module
Should I have installed alsa-driver instead of alsa-lib / alsa-utils ?
plz help. I don't understand this.
Thnx, also one more thing. I have xfce installed and also want gnome. I read that it takes a very very long time to get gnome setup. I heard there's a pckagecd of precompiled gnome I can install from. Where do I find it?
I am not a Gentoo user and until I am not aware of precompiled packages of gnome for gentoo, I tried google and it didnt return much about it... maybe another user using gentoo could help you with this one.
The "install binary packages" issue has already been answered in another thread I think.
Sabayon instead of Gentoo would be one way to go if you want this.
you sure need to try to install the alsa-driver, and maybe not as a module.
As far as I know, the alsa-drivers way is unsupported, last time I checked anyway. It's just easier and more convenient to just build alsa in your kernel (and preferable as modules since that way you can use alsaconf and pass options to the modules).
alsa-utils needs to be installed to get alsamixer and the basic alsa tools. alsa-libs will be installed as a dependency when needed, no need to worry about installing libs by hand unless you are doing development.

As others suggested, if that's the route you want to do you need a binary distro. Gentoo is source based. An intermediate solution is to use Sabayon, but remember always that Sabayon is not Gentoo.
I had problems with alsa-modules. When I made them build-in to the kernel, alsaconfig could not find my sound device so I recompiled the kernel with alsa modules. This time it worked but I had problems with headphone jack sensing. So, as the last option, I totally excluded alsa in kernel and installed alsa-drivers. Now, I am using the latest masked version and it is working fine.
Your problem may be different but you can try these options first.
