It's not really down (at least yet). Just click on "Enter the MPlayer homepage while it is still available." link at the bottom of the text. The message has to do with fighting software patents in Europe.

Coming up with new media player won't help much if all the techniques are protected with patents... Let's see... a player that cannot actually play a single file. I don't think it would be a big success

There is a similar thread about this issue somewhere. These sites are protesting the potential introduction of sotware patents in Europe, they are not under any immediate threat. Last year, there was a similar protest on quite a lot of opensource projects. I think their action aims to motivate people in the EU to protest against the introduction of the patents.

That is true. They do aim to motivate people in the EU to protest against the introduction of the software patents. Unfortunately protesting won't help much if the decision making around the subject continues as undemocratic as it has been so far.

Hmm... Could we relocate the MPlayer site to a server in a less regulated country? Maybe Russia...

I think it's time for some good, old fashioned civil disobedience. If you don't have MPlayer, install it now! They can't arrest us all

I think Mplayer is one of the classic Linux killer apps like xmms. I use it for video and music and has been one of the most versital pieces of software I have used.

I think it will take more then the UK government to get rid of Mplayer. The src is out already. someone, (wish I could program such software) will take over and make it even better.

I'm not worried

Yes, source code is out there, someone else can take over, from Asia or South America. But what about the author of MPlayer? He is doing all that great work for us and certainly feels robbed?
Maybe it's time to donate if you already haven't done so.

Post Kopete

Yes it;s true, I just logged out of the Linuxgazette and on the front page is the story. Kopete is in Distress. Kopetes woes, apparently M$ hidden somewhere, has their hand in this. The Open software foundation is being threatened and forced to close down this!!!?? We need to figure out what to do here and keep Kopete alive. Never should we have to stop using something that works. I really think M$ has a hand in this somewhere.

The site is still accessible. People are just over dramatising this situation. Like I said in my earlier post last year a lot of opensource projects were carrying the same message on their sites including Knoppix.

yes and one day I hope that who ever started these gets theirs. OSF is a free and complete entity. Programmers and users, and those who can and can't we all share in a setting that is alive and free. I am happy with Kopete.

On another note, I dl'ed AmaroK and it just won't work. I have all 4 versions and not one will work. Something tells me that I woul dhave to revert back to KDE 3.3.2 to use it.

Its okay to protest something, but unfortunately some end users actually believe that the projects are under immediate threat and will be closing down soon which is not the case.

BenneJezzerette post a thread for your amarok problems. It works fine for me in KDE 3.4 on Slack current.
