I got banned from a Windows forum... but it's OK!!

I went "inside" the "troll" and got banned from a Windows forum. But it's OK!

(I used a different username to my LQ one!)

How I did it: I signed up to a Windows forum, replied to about 5 or 6 posts with stuff like the following; "you will love linux", "you would be better off with linux", etc, etc. I then started a thread in it's version of this "General" forum, called something to the effect of "just use linux".

I wanted to find out the following:
  • What it feels like to be a troll.
  • What it feels like to be banned as a troll.
  • How long it would take to get banned.

What it feels like to be a troll?

I must admit, on a Windows forum (and the fact it was research), it was interesting and yes, I was laughing. But, to be a troll and particularly every day or whatever, I'm sorry but, I couldn't do it myself.

What it feels like to be banned as a troll?

Given I have no intention of using Windows, let alone a Windows forum and I only done it for research; it's not something that will keep me up at night.

But if I really was a troll... What would I feel?

How long it would take to get banned?

I got banned within 30 - 40mins.

I thought it would take a little longer to get banned from it. Particularly given I never did swear at anyone or even threatened anyone.

You're assuming Windows moderators don't consider "Linux" to be an expletive.

Eh... I imagine that most of the really problematic trolls aren't aware they're trolling.

M$ used to have a search engine for the tech forums back before Windows became a real problem. That search engine was part of the reason that Windows became a real problem. The search engine scanned the forums for the string "Microsoft" caselessly and when it was found the klaxons went off and the shills descended on that thread within a minute or three. That is part of how using alteratives like M$ and other nicknames became common. Using them ensured the thread could go undisturbed for hours or days. That eventually changed. They've done other things like that over time, some more blatant some less. "Team99", for example, later helped shill a failed version. Paying sites to become "partners" of one kind or another worked for a while. That reminds me, how's that WinFS coming? :P

Edit: was looking for the original documents over on Groklaw:

but found this better summary at Techrights:

I'm glad you got banned, and if you turned up on my forum boasting about how you'd been trolling other forums to try and get banned I'd ban you from that too.

LinuxQuestions does not condone trolling, be it here or in any other forums, regardless of the topic of said forum.
You have intentionally made the job of at least one forum moderator harder, just for the sake of it.
I bet you wouldn't laugh about that if someone does that to you on your job.
You should rethink your behavior and send that moderator an apology.

interesting "experiment" - i bet that's how most trolls see themselves - just trying things out...

btw, i don't think anybody in this whole wide world is a full time troll. think about that for a while, and what that makes you.

it seems the mods quickly realized what your game is and took appropriate steps.

i don't think linux comes into it at all. you could have used any number of buzzwords to achieve the same.

Tobi, I was not trying to suggest LQ would condone trolling. I was all over in 30 - 40 mins, it was not over any other length of time (and only that one time).

I was only an "experiment", I've been a member here since 2009 and my post count is just under 1000 posts (including posts in the "General" forum). I only reply to posts here in the technical forum, if I think I can answer the question being asked or add something that could help someone (the OP or otherwise). I don't have any more accounts for that forum (and only ever had the one account - the one that got banned), while I did have a Facebook account at one point, I asked them to close it, as I never really bothered with Facebook (or Twitter, etc).

I only done it as test, given that the only Linux forum (and most other forums - Linux or not) I do partake in is this one, I only partake here to try and help whoever I can. And if it's a post in the technical forums and I have no idea about the question, I try and let others answer it instead.

Even in this non-technical "General" forum, I try not to reply to every thread.

Well, if someone comes to LQ suggesting people with Linux issues to use Windows instead of addressing the real problem the users have, I would consider him/her a troll.

Maybe, but it was an experiment planned with the foresight of a teenager. You made other people's life harder just for the sake of it. You gave Linux users a bad reputation on that forum, just for an "experiment". And more than that, you damaged your own integrity and image by bragging about how you laughed about it here on LQ.

I still stand by it: you owe that moderator and maybe that whole forum an apology.

They made me a moderator. I don't use Windows much myself. Except to tune motorcycles. So I guess it depends on the site. Our admin is from Poland. Women are charge there also.

I guess being a irritating Linux user makes one a troll at Windows 10 forums?

Edit: You just got to love the brotherhood responses from members here. Shows a lack of something or another.

Also. Suggesting using Linux to fix a windows problem where I moderate at will just get you laughed out of the thread.

Because why?

You are expected to buy a bus ticket at the least. Come out and fix it. Since you are the expert.

Made more work for the windows mods.

"I still stand by it: you owe that moderator and maybe that whole forum an apology."

I agree. Poor behavior never makes sense.
