Men are more visually-oriented than women (I believe this has been proven statistically) and therefore can enjoy themselves more by looking at a screen and seeing the result after clicking some keys than a woman can. On the other hand, women are more relationally-oriented than men. There is not much of a relationship to be had with a computer. (I understand that there are exceptions. ) Let me add that I have been trying to get my wife interested in Linux, and the other day mentioned the game Frozen Bubble. She was interested in that, so I started up her computer in Linux (it is dual boot although she does not use it) and started Frozen Bubble. Unfortunately, the game froze due to some sort of problem with the sound. (The other sound applications in the computer seem to be fine.) Well, it took her about 30 seconds to get bored with the troubleshooting process, so I think that is about the end of Linux for her until maybe next June or so.
I know how you feel: error at the wrong moment.
You think she will try again?
Yes--when another opportunity arises like wanting to do something that can only be done in Linux. That may be a while, though. The reality is she can do pretty much everything she wants in XP, so there is not much of an incentive currently. As an example, she also watches some online streaming media, etc. Most of those sites only work correctly with Internet Explorer, so Linux will not get a toehold there for a while either.
I have just the opposite problem, I can't get my husband to try Linux. Forget about talking to him about terminals, crons, rpms, tarballs and all of the neat stuff we deal with everyday, if it isn't click to install, click to use then he isn't going to go for it. Though I will never give up trying to convert him

Thats why we've got Ubuntu and company for the lazy only email-surf-chat people!
Anyway back to the topic, here are some numbers to think about:
-Microsoft: only less than 10% of its development team are women
-Gnome registered that only 4% of its forum posters are women
-The PHP development team has only 2 female members, one is active
-Samba: zero
The proportion of women either working in or studying IT in the UK and US is estimated to be between 8% and 20%.
....
Is it me or are computers and developing a "this is a man's job!" ?

I remember the last job I worked we had this tall blonde girl who worked in the Network Operations Center and was she smoking! She was fine as good wine and was a BSD user and a networking enthusiast. I used to go out to lunch with her and she was tell me how she's tired of these guys hitting on her but talking about nothing but World of Warcraft and Wizards. LOL!!!!
