What's amazing is how those points are even MORE true now. How many people realize that---for similar functionality--Linux is far easier to set up than is Windows..........once you know how

I like your sig---my corollary: Anyone who says "I can't." is really only saying "I don't want to."

Left off:
#1 hunting through menus.
#2 windows activation process ... installing security patches in in linux too.
#3 ... OK, pretty much nailed that one
#4 ... windows also has built-in security features like DRM and WGA.
#5 ... this one's the weakest as it compares aquisition cost. MS claim is about TCO

Restricted to five left off the real common "no HW support". (Actually translates into "low retail support".) It would be interesting to update this for Vista.

There is no doubt in my mind that Microsoft is in serious trouble ... not so much from Linux, which has never played too strongly in their chosen play-pen, but from OS/X.

Yet I see this as really nothing more than market-pressure at work. It is fine for the world to proclaim that you are "a monopoly" provided that you never actually believe it yourself. But that's what Microsoft was all-too-happy to do. Because they had spent many years with no realistic competition, they'd grown very soft ... very blubbery and jovial. "Enjoy, oh my soul! Come, take thy ease. Eat, drink, and be merry!" Never a wise thing for a company to do... If you do it too often, it becomes ingrained in your corporate psyche. You build a thousand little fiefdoms and a palatial corporate headquarters. You quibble over trivialities and mount a real-time stock ticker in every meeting room. You tell a hundred wonderful stories about yourself and believe them all. But look! Google is busy doing it too.
