It was inevitable that it would happen that NEW software would drop 32bit support, but when the vast majority of the code is already there, and the vast majority would just need compiling with a different compiler with few if any source differences, it almost smacks of deliberate marketing pressure/influence to upgrade hardware.
There will be an awful lot of 32 bit processors in other hardware for years that use Linux.
Was watching the above youtube. Swap was off. Memory use went to 900Mb of the total 1G, everything froze, only audio continued broken, things got very shaky, hand to kill the browser, then all returned to normal with time.
Will try the same with swap on and see how it goes later.
Unable to start the swap back on with sudo swapon -a command
However, closing a few other programs before watching youtube videos seems to be helping. Will see how it goes.
The CPU use is also going to almost 90% at times, this is quite high and no wonder PC was freezing before.
Edited to add:
I closed down all programs and watched that youtube video, towards the end, Ram use was almost at 800 Mb. Cpu use also kept bouncing between 60 to 90% Must try to watch a normal video on this DL from elsewhere and see how it does. In anycase, so far as videos go, appears that this old P4 server will last from a few months to 3 years or so max. After that it will be ok to use for just sound and text. Will keep an eye out on this issue and share if there are any related developments. Thanks all for the support.
Used the top command, it gives %VSZ, Virtual Memory Size, which indicated more accurately memory use.
This is helpful when PC is getting slow to understand which process is taking up lots of memory. https://unix.stackexchange.com/quest...m-and-vsz-mean
I learned something from this issue.
Just opened my PC, cleaned insides and tried to reinstall a RAM stick after checking its info. Took me 30 mts. to get it properly installed, need to be careful, I am not as good as I was before with IT Hardware, glad I didn't break the RAM stick. It kept going sideways and will only seat properly on one side. The other side stood up, even if I tried to move it around. Took quite a few tries to seat it. Don't think I will attempt to upgrade this P4 ram, checked online, 512Mb stick is 10 bucks + shipping, so not worth it. Will use it as such as long as it lasts. Might as well try to learn the youtube downloader instead, worth a try atleast.
The older the ram is, the more costly it gets, I upgraded my sister's computer from 512MB to 2GB, cost more than a 4GB stick for mine!
(Inserting ram sticks needs equal pressure on both ends to get them to go in easily.)
This is very good to know, tx for sharing. Then I can continue to use this PC as such, if I want a better PC I must buy
a used one with more Ram. Just a point for the future to be aware about.
Now I am developing a dependency for Classic Audiobooks from Librvox.org They are so good. All the PC issues, conflicts with browser etc., made me use videos a lot less. I am sick and tired of these issues and wish peace sometimes. Free audiobooks are outstanding in this regard. However, too much of anything can also be bad. There is so much out there to listen, so I need to set some serious limits and strike a balance so that the other aspects of my life are not affected. Yesterday I was listening to this one, at low volume on my PC speakers - https://librivox.org/sea-stories-by-various/ . My pet parrots got depressed and started screaming. So had to turn it off. I am basically forced to listen on my mp3 player and love these devices. However, with time I am moving away from device/hardware addiction towards appreciating media more. Now need to set some limits on the media use.
Was told that alibaba and aliexpress are best for online shopping for older PC parts etc.,
They are reliable, take returns and deal directly with supplier was told. This option is
good to know. Wonder who still makes and who buys such older PC parts ? Will be interesting
to know this. I rarely order things online, but this is good to know.
Edited to add:
Was told that retro gaming drives retro computing. Hence those into it will want older PCs and
related parts, support.
I wanted to try CLI well, learn other distros, try LFS etc., from the CLI point but then as usual many issues came
and this project of mine got delayed much. Wonder if I can get back to this again.
Quite a few of the classics are sad, depressing at Librivox, most go along the themes of poverty, bad luck as outlined in some of the books above. Wonder, if this is also making my parrots sad sometimes, as they absorb feelings. I have made peace with my poverty, bad luck thanks to my old PC, feels like I am in a nice cozy solo submarine, enjoying. Only thing that breaks this bubble is that my buddy telling me that I am not alone, lots into retro computing/gaming. Glad others enjoy them also.
