How can I change Fedora console colors

When I try to use telnet to enter console commands on my Fedora core 1 system, the colored output from the ls command makes directories unreadable.

How can I change this dark blue color to something lighter that shows up against the black background?

I have tried changing a colors file mentioned in the man pages but it has no effect on the output of the ls command. I am currently reduced to using

ls --color=never

I think the colors are defined in

/etc/DIR_COLORS

just change to color code in there, maybe blue -> yellow(device), and change device to with a underline or something..
