When my linux machine freezes, what do I do?

I was most positive that shutting down the computer via the power button was a big no no as it doesn't allow the hardrive to unmount. But I could do nothing and was sure the problem wouldn't resolve itself.

Open a terminal and use the halt command.

Control+Alt+Backspace will reboot the box.

Opening the terminal was out of the question, since my mouse cursor wouldn't even move 0_o.
As for that command Ctrl alt backspace I shall try that possibly now just to make sure it works for this comp.

Thanks a lot for the assistance!
Sean.

Ctrl-Alt-Del reboots the box. Ctrl-Alt-Backspace shuts down the Xserver (and restarts it depending on the config settings).
