USB memory stick mounting

Hi

I have installed with Fedora 3 (linux-2.6.9),Udev,hotlplug.KDE
I am working with a Usb memory stick on my machine.I 'v got mounted successfully. When I right click on the device icon and select unmount it was umounted. But light is still blinking, where as in Windows when you right click and select eject the light goes off then it indicates devise can be safely removed.

In Linux after unmounting device the light is still on indicating power is still on.
1) Is it safe to unplug the device while it consuming power(still blinking)?
2) How do we power off

Can you plese help me out.

Thanks in advance.

Regards,
gangaraju

If you have un-mounted the device it is safe to remove. Remember Linux is not Windows, do not apply Windows habits to Linux please ;-)

Yes, it is !

You don't need to worry about power, about damage it or whatever, because USB interface was designed to be hot-plugged (and unplugged).

The windows "feature" to "remove safely the device" just sync out data and "umount" the device.

Issue the mount command and note if it was mounted with the sync option. If it was, then is safe to unplug it right way after writing something to it, because the data is already sync with the device.

In the worst case, you can at top, corrupt the FAT on the usb stick. In this case, format it to fix.
