It shows a terminal, because what you have done is logged in to your computer remotely. When you first log in, there arent usualy any applications running. What you can do from the terminal is issue commands to get whatever programs you want. I.E. 'mozilla' 'gaim' 'xmms' etc. You are in X, but it is probably a lighten desktop envirnment like blackbox or something. This cuts down on the bandwidth requirements.

If you are in a very fast connection and don't want to use the basic X server. Before starting the vncserver, you can edit the file ~/.vnc/xstartup that looks like this:
Code:
#!/bin/sh

# Uncomment the following two lines for normal desktop:
# unset SESSION_MANAGER
# exec /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc

[ -x /etc/vnc/xstartup ] && exec /etc/vnc/xstartup
[ -r $HOME/.Xresources ] && xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
xsetroot -solid grey
vncconfig -iconic &
xterm -geometry 80x24+10+10 -ls -title "$VNCDESKTOP Desktop" &
twm &
If you uncomment those first 2 lines, the vncserver will start the default windows manager (in my case Gnome).
