Question No More Sound In FC2; Use to Work!

I have installed FC2 on a p3, 512mb PC and everything runs great; my one problem is that a while ago i bought some speakers and hooked them up; the sound worked fine (the soundcard is an old one; nothing fancy)... After a few days I went thru some software updates and kernel changes and all that, just to get my fc2 up to date. Then I noticed that the sound no longer worked! The speakers worked because I tried them on another PC.

Do you think this could be from kernel change? I am running the 2.6.8 kernel right now; it's just weird that it went from working fine to not working at all...

Thanks for any help!!!

The problem description is rather vague. What does "not work" mean? There are a few recent other threads which cover sound problems in FC2. Please read through them to see what was discussed there, and then add the missing information here.

I was just wondering if it was a common error in the 2.6.8 kernel; it seems to be but I'm not sure which specific fixes to use; some say to edit modprobe.conf but I'm a newbie and
1. I'm not sure how to edit that file
2. I dont even know if it will fix my problem

Do you think that its a kernel issue?

Also, when i go into the play test sound in the KDE menu, i don't hear anything.

Theres also a possibility that my sound card died.

Thanks again for any help!

Read my thread below. I had the same problem as you, lest I be mistaken.

No, it isn't.

What is this theory based on? Does sound work again if you boot into the previous (older) kernel? You did keep the old one installed, didn't you?

Provide some details about your current configuration. Other threads give examples on how to query your system and what files' contents to post here. They also ask users to un-mute all mixers with alsamixer. Mention everything which you've tried. Be as specific as possible. Don't wait for forum members to ask lots of questions again and again.

Did you install Fedora Core 2 from scratch or did you upgrade? Whether you may need to edit the file (any text editor would suffice), depends on what is contained within the file. I don't know what's in your file.
