Nexus 5 not automounting as a storage device via USB (Fedora 24 xfce)

Hi

I've plugged in my Nexus 5 (stock Android 6.0.1) to my newly installed Fedora 24 xfce install, expecting to be able to access the files on my phone, plug and play.

From command prompt:

Code:
[~] lsusb | grep Google
Bus 002 Device 014: ID 18d1:4ee1 Google Inc. Nexus Device (MTP)
Code:
[~] df -aTh
Code:
[~] mount
... neither list anything that looks remotely like my device, at least to me

What's the correct way for me to "mount" my device? I realize MTP is more like SSH than FAT (which is probably why it's not listed by either of those commands), I just don't know how to interface with it and suggestions I've tried whilst googling haven't worked. I'm a new convert to Fedora.

Any help much appreciated!

I had a similar issue with Debian and Xfce a while back. See this thread, it might be of help:

You need to install gvfs-backends if you don't already have.

Best regards,

Thank you I had already tried this path, but hadn't paid attention to what gvfs actually is (gnome virtual file system).
The gvfs-backends package is called gvfs in the Fedora repositories, and that package is bundled with Fedora 24.

However, for MTP support I needed to install the package gvfs-mtp, which can be done via yum extender or terminal:

Code:
sudo dnf install gvfs-mtp
Having installed that, no reboot was required, plugging in my phone resulted in it being visible in File Explorer (it was mounted at mtp://[usb:002,018]/).

This should work for anyone with an Android / Google mobile device (Samsung, Sony, Motorola etc) wanting to connect/automount using USB (MTP), hopefully I've included enough useful keywords here that this will show up in search results .

Don't you now get to select a choice on how usb works in Android 6? Pull down should give you options between charging only and a few others depending.

Yes, but that in itself is not enough. The phone does not appear no matter what option you choose. Not until you install gvfs-mtp.

This issue later recurred for me, and today I've installed simple-mtpfs and that's solved it (again)!
