New Fedora 9 Install, ton of issues

Hey all, new here. I haven't used linux for years, and decided to get back into it. I use to like Fedora Core, so I decided to get Fedora 9 now.

Well, as soon as I installed it, It auto-updated a bunch of stuff (my guess is through some form of 'yum update' cause I wasn't able to use yum while it was going).

Anyway, as soon as it finishes, I restart, and I'm struck with a kazillion issues. First off, my monitor isn't detected, so it's just labeled as generic and I get a terrible resolution. The main issue I have, however, is that it freezes constantly. It's not during any single activity, but just out of the blue almost. It seems like it's most prevalent when I access the menus from the 'taskbar' type thing. As soon as I click "system", it drops down but the little pictures next to the options don't load, and then nothing works. The menu freezes there, and I can't click anything on it. It slowly freezes things one by one. I may be able to move a window for a while, but it freezes too. After a few clicks, nothing works at all but my mouse movement. If I try and hit ctrl alt f1, I'm treated to the text login, but if I type a username, the "password:" prompt doesn't show up. I can just keep typing and pressing return, but nothing. Hitting ctrl alt f7 or ctrl alt backspace (to restart x) treats me to a black screen. I have no option but to hold the power button and reboot.

This happens about every 5 minutes. I barely have time to do anything, then it freezes. A lot of times, nothing is running but an open folder or the taskbar options menus. Sometimes firefox is on and it freezes. I've tried using only init 3, and to my knowledge it encounters no issues (but I don't use it for long cause I can't command-line my way out of a paper bag). Also, sometimes it freezes on login. I type my username, and the password bar never comes up, and it's frozen (except for the mouse).

I've reinstalled about 3 times, and always the same thing. I even tried livna drivers for my gpus, and also the straight up nvidia drivers. Neither fix anything. They just distort my resolution even more by making it 1500x1400(if I remember right) until I change it back to the equally terrible, but easier to look at, 1280x768.

I don't know what's causing this. It could be the initial updates, but I'm not sure. The only thing I've done while they're downloading is play chess, so I haven't really done anything to provoke it before the first round of updates finish. I really don't feel like re-installing again.

I've recently looked up some xorg.conf files and adjusted mine to match. The nvidia drivers came up with "no screen found" after installing them, so I had to fix that somehow. I can post my conf file if it's necessary, but this stuff happens even when I don't change anything.

I don't think it's my computer either, here hare my specs:
Quad core (4x) 2.4 Ghz Q6600 processor(s)
2 Gigs of ram
SLI 8800 GT (2x) 1 Gig GPUs
250 Gig SATA hdd with XP on it and an 80 Gig IDE hdd with the FC9 install
750W PSU

Also, it's important to note that windows doesn't have any issues at all.

Anyone else have this problem? I've tried searching, but I couldn't find anything. It's strange that I'm getting this issue so early on. It's almost like FC9 itself is broken. Is there something I'm forgetting/doing wrong?

Oh, and no, my install disc isn't corrupted, I did the checksum thing.

Any help/suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, and let me know if you need additional info.

Seems your problems are X-related.

Your driver options are nv and the proprietary one.

First remove the proprietary one and try nv

Try installing envy if required.

Don't you know your monitor specs?

Try google for generating modelines

Desktop: kde4 or kde or Gnome?

Unfortunately, I'm a complete linux n00b here, so I had trouble understanding a lot of what you said. Is there any way you could clarify? I'll try and answer what I can:

What's "nv"?
So, you want me to remove the official nvidia drivers and then put on nv? I assume "nv" is "envy", as you put it later, but I don't know what that is either. Explain a bit further, if possible.

I do, but I'm not sure how that helps me. I know it's resolution, screen size, frequency ranges, etc. I put that stuff in the xorg.conf file, but there still isn't a 1680X1050 option.

I don't quite understand that...at all.

Amani is talking about drivers - most likely you have a driver issue. Please post your X config (/etc/X11/xorg.conf) so we can see what drivers you are using. Fedora comes with open source NVidia drivers built in but NVidia also provide propritary Linux drivers.

Your Nvidia graphics card is not supported by the Nvidia driver (as yet).

So you will need to uninstall that first or consult Nvidia support.
See the documentation on the Nvidia site


Yes do post your xorg.conf file.

nv is the open source driver

A Modeline is a configuration line in the x-server configuration file (xorg.conf) that provides information to the X server about a connected computer monitor or television and how to drive it at a specified display resolution. Modelines may no longer be necessary in XFree86 versions 4 and higher as the x-server can now probe for correct values.
To limit probing use a modeline.

Ok, well, this kind of sucks. I made a post on fedoraforum.org as well, and I've been following their instructions for a bit. I had the nvidia proprietary jazz installed, and that wasn't working for me. I reinstalled fedora 9 and got the livna drivers per their instructions. It then did not detect my screen. I went into the xorg.conf file and fixed it up a bit according to some things I found online.

When I restarted, it looked great. I had a nice 1680x1050 resolution. I ran glxgears and got a superb framerate. Just as I got happy that everything was good in the world, I clicked the "system" menu at the top, and it crapped on itself. Everything froze except for my mouse. Had to hold the power button to turn off my comp.

The device, screen, and monitor sections were copied from other people with similar stuff. I modified them to fit my stuff. I'm positive about the BUSIDs, the vertrefresh/horizsync. I added "1680x1050" to the "Modes" line, and kept whatever else was there from another guy's conf file. The other stuff was there from the original conf file.

Anything wrong with it? Anything I can do now about the freezing?

You said that my cards aren't supported? I'll check the nvidia site for some support docs, but it seems like I'm at the end of my rope. Some so basic as opening the applications menu kills it. This time, I didn't even get the auto-updates when I first installed, just livna kmod-nvidia. I don't know what's doing this.

as you found out Fedora 9 is VERY VERY cutting edge , so much so that not everything will work or even install or run .

due to the beta x11( xorg) in fedora 9 not all 3d cards will work in fedora 9 .The card companies have not wrote the drivers for the very,very, new code .Foe example:
ATI has NO drivers for the new x11 ,Nvidia has most of there cards working with it ,and only some integrated ( with motherbroad)chip sets have drivers .
ether Downgrade x11 to the one in fedora 8 or install fedora 8

Ok, that makes sense. I guess there's no set release date or anything for these drivers, eh? I guess I'll just have to wait to get back into linux.

I don't know if it's worth it to 'downgrade' to fedora 8, only to have to get fedora 9 a few months later (or whenever they plan on releasing drivers for 8800GT cards). Winblows it is, then, I guess.

A fully up to date respin of Fedora-8 is available from fedora respin. That is an option.
Other choices: Kubuntu or Medibuntu.

nv should work fine or you can try vesa for the time being. Anyway fire the Nvidia people
For modelines use
#gtf 1280 1024 75
#gtf 1680 1050 <your refresh rate>

put them in the section Monitor after the vertrefresh line
...like..
