Migrating to Fedora Core 1 from Redhat 9?

Hi all,

I was actually wondering what the general consensus was regarding moving from RH9 to FC1? Mostly I felt that things were getting a little bloated on my old rh9 install, and I wanted to re-install from scratch (I think I may have finally broken through the noob barrier a little bit). So my current rh9 is still my "testing out linux to see if its usable for me", which oddly it has been for almost a year now, with *no* booting back into windows!

Mostly I have been using things like Mplayer, Evolution, OpenOffice.Org, and playing my quake3. Does anyone know if there have been issues concerning this base set of software?

For instance, Evolution claims not to support any versions of RH past rh9 on their website?

Any huge issues that I should be aware of before upgrading? I was also going to update the kernel to one of the newer 2.6 variants as soon as I get the system going. Any thoughts on that (concerning problems?)

As always, I appreciate everyones help with this. LQ has been a major factor for me cutting the cord with MS products, and I can't thank everyone enough for making my introduction into the *nix world so wonderful!

Fedora Core 1 works fine. Whenever you install a new operating system you should install it on a separate partition and dual boot until the new system is stable. Then move your data from the old OS to the new. That way you can fix the inevitable problems in your new install at your leisure.

Upgrading the kernel can be messy. Search the board and you'll see where people have problems with USB and sound (I've actually posted a few).

I've heard positive things about FC2 Test 3 and you might check into it.

Just a note, but I had rh9 installed, and have managed to successfully upgrade the kernel to the 2.6.xx series (though there are a few small things still popping up, mostly just annoying module error messages, but overall a stable system).

So is the kernel upgrade just as messy as any other distro going from 2.4.x to 2.6.x, or is it something more specific to FC1 that is causing the headaches?

I'll check out FC2 and see how things are progressing there...

I just did a upgrade installation from RH9 to Fedora Core 1 today. It went smootly. I use the machine as a personal web server. I haven't seen any problems yet. I downloaded the newest up2date and installed all the relevent updates. I will post something if I see any instability. I didn't see a YUM selection in the Redhat-config-services menu though????

Does anyone know if Fedora Core 1 can be updated to Fedora Core 2(not a test version) through YUM?

Later,
Nate
