GUIs won't load from GDM

After some... Less than friendly rebooting KDE and GNOME fail to start from GDM. I have to do a "failsafe" session then run "startkde" from the command line. Everything works as it should from then on. Can anyone give me a hint as to what might be broken? I get no errors in XFree86 logs, only "kdeinit failed" pops up once and a while in a dialog box. Seems like there must be a file that has been corrupted that is causing this.
