dont seem to work on any distro i try, some parts work some dont ?

eg irc does msn doesnt ?

hm.... maybe you don't have the libraries necessary to run'em.

i dont think msn can be used from irc i think irc is its own chat cleint

IRC is Internet Relay Chat; it's a protocol. Some chat clients support it, some don't. Both GAIM and Kopete do. (Personally, I use XChat for IRC, but that's just me).

I've used GAIM with AOL IM, Novell Groupwise Messenger, IRC, and Yahoo. It also supports Gadu Gadu (whatever that is), Jabber, MSN, and a few others

I've used Kopete with IM and IRC. It supports some other protocols, but I don't have it at hand at the moment.

What specifically doesn't work?
