Fedora 10 problems with upgrading from Fedora Core 5
Using a Fedora 10 i386 DVD I installed Fedora 10 as an upgrade to me Fedora Core 5. After going thru all the steps a window tells me I have successfully installed Fedora 10. However (1)None of the Core 5 Evolution info e.g.inbox, sent, addresses, preferences etc. appears in Fedora 10, (2) None of the Core 5 Firefox info, e.g. bookmarks, etc appears in Fedora 10, (3)None of the Core 5 user names and passwords appear in Fedora 10. I am able to reenter the user names and passwords in Fedora 10 but when I log in neither Evolution nor Firefox are functional.
How can I transfer the Core 5 data in to Fedora 10? The Fedora 10 Evolution Setup Assistant says I can restore Evolution from the backup file but I dont know how to identify the Core 5 Evolution backup file? Fedora 10 Firefox says it cant find a server and says an incorrect firewall setting could interfere with web browsing.
The Fedora 10 i386 DVD has a section titled Rescuing Fedora 10. Would this be of any use? Thanks for your help, Larry
That is an old version of FC! Next time, you should consider putting your user data onto a separate partition so that when you upgrade your OS you will not lose your user data! If the installation process did not reformat the disks, then your user data may still be there on the disk. Can you find any of your user data on the disk? If so, it can be as simple as finding the directory for your old email user data and importing it to your new email application if they have compatible formats. If they have incompatible formats, you can install the old email application and then import your user data, or you can convert the format.
It would be good if all email applications allowed you to save all your email data in a text file format that any other email application could then easily import it. So many different and incompatible formats makes problems like you have encountered more difficult! It would also be good if all email applications allowed you to archive your email into a text format as well, so that you can easily save your email when upgrading your OS, as you did!
bapigoo9,Thanks for your reply. I will look for my user data on the disk(hard drive) by going thru the Fedora 10 file system. Is there another way to look for my user data on the Fedora Core 5 file system. Is there any pertinent help on the Rescue choice of the Fedora 10 DVD that I used to upgrade Fedora Core 5 to Fedora 10? Thanks for your help. Larry
Update| (1) I was able to configure my printer and functions ok now. (2) I don't know how to get in the file system using a terminal. When I go to terminal I see [localhost@llarry] $ but when I ls I don't see any files. (3) I can't get my modem dialup to activate. The Network Administration Tool window shows. under Hardware, Generic Modem, Modem, Modem0, Configured. I have entered the Provider Name, Dialup phone number, username and passwrord. When I click Activate the status changes immediately from Inactive to Active but I don't hear the modem dialing and the dialup icon says I'm not connected. Thanks for your help, Larry
My DSL link, i.e.'eth0' doesn't activate when I turn on the computer even though I"ve checked that box in the eth0 preferences/setup. I have to go to the network devices window and click on eth0 activate to activate. What do I have to do to get eth0 to activate at turn on? Also the computer comes up in the offline mode and I have revert to online mode in order to get Firefox. How can I tell the computer to come up in the online mode? Thanks.
I was able to setup Fedora 10 to activate etho on startup by disabling Network Manager and enabling Network in Services. Now, I'm trying to get Evolution Send/Receive to activate/highlight when I activate my dialup connection to my isp. I've tried several POP3 server names and passwords but nothing seems to work. Thanks
