Check /var/log/Xorg.0.log for error messages.
When the Ctrl-Alt-F7 fails, hopefully a Ctrl-Alt-F1 will bring you back to a console screen where you can do something like this:
Code:
$ tail -n 20 /var/log/Xorg.0.log
(II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "Mouse0" (type: MOUSE)
(II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "Synaptics" (type: MOUSE)

SynapticsCtrl called.
Synaptics DeviceOn called

(II) Mouse0: ps2EnableDataReporting: succeeded

BOGUS LENGTH in write keyboard desc, expected 4912, got 4916
SynapticsCtrl called.
Synaptics DeviceOff called
(II) Open ACPI successful (/var/run/acpid.socket)
(II) Mouse0: ps2EnableDataReporting: succeeded
Synaptics DeviceOn called
(--) Synaptics auto-dev sets device to /dev/input/event1
(**) Option "Device" "/dev/input/event1"
(--) Synaptics touchpad found
to see any error messages in the log file.
(Of course, I don't have any problem switching, so my log file is, relatively, clean. Now that I've seen it, I suppose I'll need to figure out the "BOGUS LENGTH" comments, but they don't seem to cause me any problem.)
