/dev/modem -> /dev/ttySx?

Is /dev/modem just a link to some other device, like /dev/ttyS0? I don't see a /dev/modem in my FC6.

Thanks.

Yes, you can create /dev/modem with this command:

ln -s /dev/ttyS0 /dev/modem

The /dev/modem port should be available in kppp or through main menu/Administration/Network as you can set up a modem connection through both of these and wvdial which should be installed in a default installation setup. /dev/ttyS0 should also be present/available in all.
But yes, it is usually a link created by modem proprietary drivers that need to be compiled, like my Lt modem that uses a martian driver kit which is a two part deal, one is a kernel module, the other is the proprietary source used in user space called martian_modem which by default creates a port called /dev/ttySM0 which is not available in kppp or through Network settings, so I have to create a link to /dev/modem to have kppp use /dev/ttySM0.
