A complete F&#@&#& n00b

Hi, I have been a religious XP fan for the past cpl of years, but am deciding to venture into the world of fedora. First of all, my harware specs:

~ AMD Duron 850 (Soon to be a 1.7 athlon)
~ ASUS A7V (Also being replaced)
~ NVIDIA GeForce 4 MX440
~ WD 120 GIG HD
~ 512 MB RAM
~ Mitsumi CD R/RW - 48X
~ 17" ASTVision 7L
~ HP Scanjet 2200c

If there is going to be any issues with my hardware?

btw i know SFA about linux, so please bare with me for the next cpl of weeks as I ask pointless and stupid questions....

Looking over your specs, the processor, hd and ram appear to be ok. Can't comment on you mobo as you say you're going to change it. You may want to do a Google for your scanner, I would say that that is the only thing which may give you a problem.

Welcome to LQ.

If you don't buy the power pack, you will have to install a driver for your video card, so make sure you install the kernel-source and developmental packages.

I have heard that some HP printer/scanners can give problems, but you can check the hardware compatibility list on the Mandrake site.

# Pre-installation guides
GNU/Linux pre-installation checklist
The Pre-Installation Help File

# Partitioning
Linux Partition HOWTO
Rute - Partitions, File Systems, Formatting, Mounting
Proper Filesystem Layout

nVidia driver, you want the Linux IA32 driver

# Mandrake links
Mandrake home page
Mandrake Users website
Easy urpmi config for Mandrake
urpmi mini-HOWTO
Easy software management: Red Carpet
Maximum RPM
rpmfind
You didn't install the developmental packages? As root, command:
urpmi gcc
An Introduction to the Midnight Commander. You can install it by commanding:
urpmi mc
Midnight Commander home page

It seems a lot of people have problems with NVIDIA drivers.

"make sure you install the kernel-source and developmental packages." what does this mean? (sorry if its a stupid question)

Don't do a default installation, select custom and Customize the set of packages to be installed, look through the packages and ensure that you select kernel-source and the developmental packages.

As the other poster said: select custom installation and at this screen scroll down and select kernel development tools.
