Which desktop environment in Debian 6.0

Hi All,

I am new to Debian environment.I am planning to install the latest Debian 6.0

Can somebody please let me know whether 512 MB RAM is sufficient for installing desktop environment as well?

If not, which among one of these will be good (KDE,xfce, lxde,GNOME) for my 512 MB RAM, 32 bit, intel core duo processor,1.66 Gh laptop?

During installation process(CD image and internet),will i be able to choose all these diff desktop environ?
Thanks in advance

In Debian 6 Gnome is 2.30 and will work quite well on 512 MB RAM and the rest of your machines specs are ok for it by the information you have given. I really don't know about KDE but certainly LXDE and XFCE will work with 512 MB RAM as well.

If you have DVD1 you can choose what Desktop Environment you want, if you have CD1 you have to download the CD1 that corresponds to the DE you want.

All the DEs will work fine, except probably KDE. I have 512MB of RAM and KDE was slow on my machine every time I tried it. From what I have gleaned observing who says KDE works well on their computers and those who say it does not, it appears that 1GB of RAM is required for KDE to operate optimally. Unless it is tweaked to removed the bells and whistles. Gnome 2, XFCE and LXDE will all work beautifully though with your RAM.
