debian stable without hesitation. It's the most stable of all the debian branches (of course... ;-) ) and obviously more stable than debian-based distro (unbutu...) that usually use packages from unstable. Basically once you have debian sarge (=stable) setup, you can forget about it and just concentrate on learning linux :-)
you can get the iso there: http://www.debian.org/CD/netinst/
and the installation guide: http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/i386/
Good luck! and ask if you need help :-)

I would recommend Sarge, which has recently been promoted to the new "stable" release. (The previous stable release was Woody)

Debian has three versions: stable (Sarge), testing (Etch), and unstable (Sid). You'd probably be safe with either Sarge or Etch; if you want the very latest and greatest go with Sid. http://www.debian.org/releases/ -- J.W.

My first Linux install was Corel Linux 1.0 (Debian) in 1999, but I haven't really used Linux until a couple years ago using Mandrake and Red Hat/Fedora. I knew nothing about Linux then (like I do now? ha!) Those distros may be of service too.

Xandros is now the old Corel Linux and they are up to version 3. When I tried it, it was very easy to install.

Just my dirty, corroded, bent, useless $.02

sid?... he is a newbie... :-) and etch can be even worse now that sarge is out... for him, I would advise by order of preference: 1/ sarge(stable), 2/sid(unstable), 3/etch(testing)
and sarge is not out of date now and is very nice to use, has an installer, etc... it seems to me to be a good start... after he will upgrade to unstable if he feels like...

yea and it's how it works... it only contains the base system... you will download *only* what you want/need with apt-get later...
Good luck!

It's the right one, even if it is small. If you choose desktop environment, you will get at least
780 packages. Is that enough ? (1.7 Gb)...

yea but choosing desktop environment will install kde and gnome... better to install it by end later doing apt-get install kde or apt-get install gnome... I would advise not to select anything from tasksel during the install...
