Question VNC: Kde applications take 10 minutes to load

Hello.. I have a powerful new server with Debian etch and I connect with it trought VNC (I run startkde & in .vnc/xstartup).

The problem is that most KDE applications (and KDE itself) take **10 minutes** to load.. once loaded they works normally.

I don't have this problem with gnome applications.. it looks like they are searching for something and then they go in timeout... but what are they searching for???

KDE stop itself for 10 minutes in "Initialising system services"..

This is the VNC log (IP changed):

I don't think this has anything to do with X, but with KDE. Have you tried logging in to the server locally without using VNC? Does it work better? Anyways, the 10 minute wait seems like something's not responding and the timeout value is way too high. You could try connecting to the server locally and doing something like this:

strace startkde 2> /tmp/log

Then you can just open that file while it's waiting and take a look at the last line. It's probably waiting for some service to start. You can troubleshoot it further from there on.

Btw. if you want _really_ good remote X performance, you should consider FreeNX from http://freenx.berlios.de/. It's an excellent piece of software that is way faster than VNC, and the client works on Windows, Linux and probably OS X.

Hope this helps.
