speaker-test error...what now?

My linux kernel is 2.6.16:

# uname -a
Linux debian 2.6.16 #1 Mon May 8 22:18:24 EDT 2006 i686 GNU/Linux

I've compiled this kernel with sound support:

~# modinfo soundcore
filename: /lib/modules/2.6.16/kernel/sound/soundcore.ko
description: Core sound module
author: Alan Cox
license: GPL
alias: char-major-14-*
vermagic: 2.6.16 686 gcc-3.3
depends:

I've been trying to get a soundblaster live 24 bit card to work.

I think I'm almost there.

The last thing Iv'e done here is to run the speatker-test.

It gives me an error that I'm not sure how to get around.

Here is the output:

# speaker-test

speaker-test 1.0.11rc5

Playback device is default
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 1 channels
Using 16 octaves of pink noise
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:863snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
Playback open error: -16,Device or resource busy

Can someone clue me in here...what device is busy? Is something trying to use my soundcard? How can I make it un-busy?

Anyway, it's late and I'm spent here...Does anyone have any insghts about what may be going on?
