Screen resolution

Can someone give me a hand here.

I'm having trouble getting Gnome to start up in the resolution that I want to set as the default. Meaning I have to change it each time I boot into Gnome. When my system boots up it starts the GDM login manager and the resolution is at 1152 X 768. Which I find puzzling as I don't even have that resolution anywhere in my XF86Config-4 file. However, if I then log in as root it loads gnome in the resolution that I want (800x600) which is fine except it only works for the root. If I log in under any other username it stays at 1152x768 I then have to change it once I have logged into gnome. Can someone point me in the right direction. I want to log into GDM or KDE or whatever at 800x600 but it doesn't seem to matter what I put in XF86Config-4. Does the system get the resolution info from somewhere else. I'm running Sarge, kernel 2.4.27 Thanks to anyone who can help.

Here is part of my XF86Config

your modes are all wrong.

They should look like this:

800x600

You need the 'x' between the numbers

I think you should have a modeline line, e.g.
Modeline "1024x768" 94.50 1024 1056 1152 1368 768 769 772 800 +hsync +vsync
in your "monitor" section (don't use the above modeline...).

Try logging into Gnome, changing the resolution to 800x600, and than run from console "xvidtune"
(Say "ok" to the warning) it will let you control you display - width, height, left and right - you can make changes if your display isn't centered.
Click "apply" (if you made any changes) - this will save your display position only for current session.

And most important, click "show". This will print into console your current modeline, somthing like: "800x600" 56.25 800 832 896 1048 600 601 604 631 +hsync +vsync
Copy that line (with the word Modeline in front of it) into the "Monitor" section in XF86Config-4

As BlueCow said, I think you should also change:

SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "800 600"
EndSubSection

into:

SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "800x600"
EndSubSection

"Depth 24" is your default color depth (says so in your "screen" section)...

If you write:
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection
and have ModeLines also for "1024x768" and "640x480" in your "Monitor" section then you will be able to switch between resolutions...

Hey thanks guys. It is so simple now you pointed it out. I put in the x in my modes and it worked a treat. I actually had it working by using my old XF86Config file from when I had Woody installed but it is a relief to know why it wasn't working.
Thanks for the tips on Xvidtune as well. I had found that but I had no idea what to do with it.

Cheers
