This would be my suggestion but be very aware that MATE is not the full Gnome 2. Many packages have had their names changed so you may end up with 2 versions of the same package just with different names, MATE is GTK2 Gnome in Wheezy and its associated applications are GTK3, MATE is a little bit buggy at times but the developer is working on this.
All in all if you are confident working with the occasional bug go for MATE just understand it is in Testing for a reason.
Tails, the secure&anonymous distro, is using Wheezy as base with Gnome 2 in the latest version of autumn 2014.
With a working and updated networkmanager, nm-applet.
But I guess it will have some limitations, though I cant immediately spot any using it.
Maybe not that complicated to install wheezy without gnome, some small desktop, and then enable oldstable and install gnome2. if there are not too many limitations.

If you are using a fairly simple install of Mate; standard setup with a few non DE specific packages added, you should have little problem with it.
I "upgraded" my wifes laptop from Ubuntu 10.04 using the same /home and installing Wheezy, then testing but near release, on the old /. This was installed from a netinstall image with no DE. Mate was installed from the Mate repository.
There was some sort of problem during the first month after a package upgrade but it was so easy to correct I forget what it was. She has been using it since then with no problems.

Wheezy (backports) MATE is just as functional as a DE as Gnome2 was it just doesn't have the full Gnome 2 application suite.
If you could use Gnome 2 you can use MATE.
i guess you're talking about the gnome desktop environment?
a few months ago i tried centos 6.5 and it uses gnome 2 as DE.
there's some confusion about the toolkits (and i'm not sure myself) - but gtk2 is not equal to gnome 2, and gtk3 is not equal to gnome 3. it's more complex.

Tool kits are used to build the packages video interface. As long as you have both gtk2 and gtk3 installed there is no problem.
Having both installed is automatic as they come in as depends of the packages that need them.
I am a Xfce user and Xfce 4.10 was targetted to use gtk3 but they didn't make that switch in time for the release due to some problems with implementing the new panel options. So it is still gtk2 and most of packages I use are all gtk3. I can't see any problems it is causing and the wifes laptop doesn't have any problem with Mate.
I should say that I don't know what backports for Wheezy is offering for Xfce. Default install for Wheezy was Xfce 4.8. While I have Wheezy installed I rarely use it. I run testing and Sid which both use 4.10. I did install the newer version of Thunar on Wheezy from the experimental repo back when Wheezy was testing so I could have tabbed browsing in the file manager. Works fine still.
If you are really looking for a good replacement for Gnome 3 you might want to look at Xfce 4.10 if it is available in backports for Wheezy.
The panel system is what the Gnome 2 panel wanted to grow up to be.
Mate is a very fine DE though and I am glad to hear it is available from backports now.
I don't use the stable packports. Can't really argue against using it though. Wifes will be upgraded to Jessie soon after it becomes stable so I am not changing a thing there until then.
