So, if su works, what would be the problem? Where do you want to login as root? You can always login as root by pressing Ctrl-Alt-F1, of course in text mode. By default, Debian's policy is not to allow root logins at startup. After all, why would you need that?

This is not as big a problem as you think. You are probably trying to login to the X session (either Gnome, KDE, etc). The problem is that root is blocked.
You will need to edit your display manager's startup file to allow root to login. I'm not familiar with any of the others, but I am KDE, or kdm so I'll give you directions for that, and maybe you can figure it out for the others.
First edit the /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc file.
Look for a line that says "Hiddenusers=" and make sure root is all that is listed beside that.
Look for another line that starts as "AllowRootLogin=" and change that to "true"
Save the file and exit.
After you restart X (logout of KDE, Gnome, etc. and then do a ctrl+Alt+Backspace), root should be able to login.
However, the general warning is that you should never "Have" to login as root directly unless there is a problem with the only other user account on your machine. And you DEFINITELY don't want to run as root full time.
For gdm there's a GUI config tool called gdmsetup where you can allow root logins from gdm. And somewhere there's a file called gdm.conf that you can edit with text editor to achieve the same result. Just don't let root logins become a habit.
