No window manager

I recently changed my /etc/apt/sources.list from woody to testing and ran -

#apt-get update
#apt-get dist-upgrade

After downloading over 400MB of packages and then removing the old ones it stopped and everything seemed fine. I rebooted and was confronted with an xterm asking me to login but no window manager.

Did I do something critically wrong here? Were all the files I downloaded supposed to install themselves or do I have to do it?

Any advice would be most welcome.

Hi there not sure what went wrong with that as you have not provded many details. But if X s not starting with the window manager, you can 1) type startx

That will log you in to your default desktop.

2) as root, type apt-get update t
then apt-get install gdm

That will install the gnome wndow manager.

or if you like you can use xdm which is X default (and ugly) manager or kdm which is kde window manager.

Let us know how you get on

Londonboi

P.S.

f it did not install your files that you downloaded then try typeing

apt-get install -f

Let us know what happens
