If you use the debian way of installing (through make-kpkg):
Code:
fakeroot make-kpkg --added-patches openswan <your_usual_options> kernel_image
*
If you use the general way (make, make modules_install, make):
go in your kernel tree
and issue:
Code:
/usr/src/kernel-patch/all/apply/openswan
and then compile and install as usual

*
If its a patch not present as a debian-package (example con kolivas patches or the kernel.org patches) then
go in your kernel tree
Code:
patch -p1 -i /some/dir/patch-wonderful_patch
your kernel is patched
Depending on how the patch maintainer has done his patch you may have to tweak the -p1 to -p0,.. (man patch)

you mean, as usual:
Code:

# make

# make modules_install

# make

my error:
make
make modules_install
make install

otherwise you may still boot your old system
or if its the same kernel version and you overwrite your modules directory, you might run in big problems if you have removed some modules during modules_install
