Lockups after fresh install of Debian 10, 11, and 12?

Hello all,

I'm a mid-level, long-time Linux user curious as to why I get random screen lockups after installing Debian?

I've tried on the last 3 releases to install Debian, everything looked good, but then after clicking around for a short time I get random problems. Last night, for example, after an easy, no-worries, standard GUI install (accepting all defaults) of Debian 12 with the new Gnome DE, just clicking from one topic to another in the settings app caused the system to lock and require that I hard-reset. On reboot, I randomly got the same and similar lockups changing tabs in Firefox web browser. Not every time, but randomly, and every several minutes.

This has occured on both of my older Dell laptops (one a 2012 and the other a 2013, both great condition, one a business class and the other an ultralight - not sure if this is even relevant, or if more system info specifics would be helpful). I've had these kinds of lockups whether I've installed Gnome, KDE, or XFCE. When I install something like Linux Mint, however, I don't get these lockups at all.

I've been wanting to move all my machines to Debian for some time (the above, plus a much newer desktop machine), so I'm curious what could be the difference causing these to happen, and if there's something I could do to correct it. Like, is it a difference in kernel, or something else like that maybe? I'm stymied, but I'm willing to experiment, install, config, etc. as needed to get it working - but I'm at a loss what might be the best next step.

Thanks for your thoughts / advice.

Real help requires us knowing more than just "Dell laptop". What are the specifications, of all three machines? Input/Output from inxi -Faz pasted here using code tags would probably provide most of what we would need for starters. For best results, use Bookworm, or any distro providing a non-ancient inxi version. Debians and most of its derivatives don't try to keep inxi anything like current. Best for most Debian users is to get it straight from the author, so that self-upgrades (using its -U switch) are available. Upgrades are typically in the 6-10 week range, with current 3.3.28 just days old.

Ok, thanks!

Here are the two laptop inxi reports, for the machines that have the random lockups on new Debian installs.

This one has since been put back on Linux Mint (needed more often than the other one, below), but has had random lockups on Debian 10/11/12, as well.

The 6540 is running an older OS version with Cinnamon desktop, running the display on X11. The 7240 is running Gnome desktop on display Wayland. These are very different systems. First thing I'd try is on the login screen selecting to run your Gnome session on X11 instead of Wayland. Wayland is newer technology that isn't mature enough for everybody's hardware yet. I only run my Debians with TDE on X11, and my Haswell desktop (7th gen Intel, like your i7) seems solid running 3 displays:

I did as suggested and have worked on the 7240/with Gnome/X11 machine for a short time this evening - with no lockups or other problems noted so far while doing the same things it was locking up on before.

I will play around with it some more this evening and see if it stays good. I will report again tomorrow.

It worked without a single problem last night, and I did everything I could think of to test it. I'm so pleased!

Later today I'm going to install it with X11 on the 6540 laptop (my normal daily driver) and see how that goes. I'll reply with a report after I use that for a day or so, as well.

oK - I've run it on my daily driver machine for the last several hours and had no problems whatsoever. So sticking with X11 was the trick

Thank you so much!
