Jessie apt-get Problem with Updates

Hey folks.

I'm a longtime RedHat guy who took a different job and am now in a Debian environment, so I apologize if I ask what seem like goofy questions.

Today I am having a problem updating some servers running Debian 8 (Jessie).

We use the University of Chicago mirror, but from what I can tell, my same issue would happen pointed at ftp.us.debian.org.

When I run

Code:
# apt-get update
it fails before finishing.

Here's the error at the end:

Code:
W: Failed to fetch http://debian.uchicago.edu/pub/debian/dists/jessie-updates/InRelease Unable to find expected entry 'main/source/Sources' in Release file (Wrong sources.list entry or malformed file)

E: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
Sure enough, if I browse to http://debian.uchicago.edu/debian/dists/jessie-updates/ and click InRelease, there is no "main/source/Sources."

Has anyone else encountered this?

Again, I apologize if I sound like a n00b...

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Mike

No need to apologize -- any help is better than no help!

When you say the "plain deb us site" do you mean http://ftp.us.debian.org ?

Because when I go to http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/dist...ates/InRelease there is no main/source/Sources on that list either.

Unlike, say, the stretch-updates file http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/dist...ates/InRelease which DOES list main/source/Sources.

That's why I'm confused, and I think that's why apt is confused.

I'll wait a few days and see if it changes.

Thanks again!

Mike

Here's the answer. Wheezy and Jessie "updates" were moved from the regular distributions and mirrors and are now archived. So just delete (or comment out) the lines in sources.list for "jessie-updates"

https://lists.debian.org/debian-deve.../msg00006.html

Hope this helps someone else!
