Installation question
How folks,
I'm prepared to install Debian-30r2 on a P-II PC and have the relevant 7 CDs burned already. Unfortunately the hard drive can't be defected after booting up the PC with CD-1 because the former is connected to a ATA-66 controller. The booting sequence on BIOS only allows selecting;
Cdrom, A, C
Cdrom, C, A
SCSI, A, C.
A,C, SCSI
without
Cdrom, SCSI, A
Alternatively I can make net installation as the PC is connected to 3MB broadband. However it is a slow PC installing from source may take lengthy time to complete.
Previously I installed RH9 on this PC by connecting the hard drive to Primary IDE first. After installation completed the hard drvie was reconnected to ATA-66 controller. It worked for me. I have no idea whether the same trick can apply to Debian.
Kindly advise whether there are other solutions.
Besides I tried to make a rescue/boot floppy from another Linux box by following the section "4.3.1 Writing Disk Images From a Linux or Unix System" of the installation manual under /cd-1/doc/install/doc/ch-install-methods.en.html#s-create-floppy
dd if=file of=/dev/fd0 bs=1024 conv=sync ; sync
What shall I substitute the file of 'if=file'
TIA
B.R.
