Installation _HELL_

I have just done a fresh install of Debian Linux 2.4.27-2-386.
The installation went smoothly and no errors were displayed that I could see through the installation. After it advised me to remove my CDROM from the drive and reboot.
My GRUB boot loader comes up but when I try to access both the recovery and debian partition I get this error message:

Segmentation fault
<6>Jounralled Block driver loaded
pivot_root: No such file or directory
/sbin/init: 432: cannot open dev/console: No such file
Kernel panic: Attempted to kill init!

I am trying to install this on my Acer TravelMate 2700 laptop, I have no floppy disk drives and my only Linux CD is the Debian boot disk.
Any ideas how I can go about resolving this?

Thanks for your help,
DaveyB

Is it a fairly new laptop? If so, try re-installing and typing linux26 at the boot prompt. This should install Sarge with a newer 2.6.8 kernel. Or if you're brave, download the Etch cd, which will give you a 2.6.16 kernel.

I would say, install Etch if you want a fairly new laptop to work. One caveat: I recommend getting the "weekly" netinstall disk rather than the "official" Beta3 ... I install Etch a lot, on laptops as well as desktop machines. Several people have complained about the Grub install not working from the Beta3 installation. I actually had it happen myself recently, after pooh poohing other such reports. I reinstalled using the weekly build with no problems.

I'd vote Etch also. I"m in the process of doing that now. I'm having a bit of trouble as I want KDE not Gnome. I had it going but was also having some issues with Bibletime. So far it's been fine other than that.
Sarge gave me no issues at all as far as those go but I was having issues trying to make my usb flashdrive auto mount. I've read that Etch is supposed to take care of that for me.

Thankyou for all your help, by using the Linux26 at boot I was able to install. I am all setup apart from a couple of things.

1) I have installed KDE and for some reason my resolution is to small, I set the value to 800x600 in the options as I know it was safe. Now I am in the GUI I want to increase the resolution but it wont let me choose anything higher than this. Any ideas?

I will only ask 1 question at a time . Thankyou for your help again!

As root, do
Code:
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86
on a commandline. Change xfree86 to xorg if that's what you have. Answer the questions, accept defaults if you don't know what to answer. When you come to the screen section, choose "medium" over "advanced" as this allows you to simply add the required resolutions. Select a resolution with an asterix (*) with the space-bar. Save the config file and restart the X-server.

I assume you figured out that you have to get that from Sid. Hasn't given me any problems tho. More stable overall than Gnomesword which is in testing.

Brilliant now my resolution looks good and my laptop keyboard is back to normal. Now then just a couple more questions and I will be on my way. Thanks again for all your help.

I have a realtek ac'97 Audio card, for some reason when I boot into Debian with this SOUND card I get an error message saying:

Sound Server Infromation Message
Error whilst initializing the sound driver
device /dev/dsp can't be opened (no such file or directory)
The sound service will continue, using the null output device.

Any ideas how I can fix it?

Did you do aptitude install alsa-utils? These are the Advanced Linux Sound Architecture utilities for interfacing with sound cards.

Oh, and just for the record, when you solve one issue you generally should start a new thread for the next issue. Makes it easier for people to answer the second, third, etc questions if there's a new thread. A lot of people who know how to solve your sound problem might skip over this thread because it is about installation.
