Compiling the modern 4.x kernel (bzImage, initrd.img, /lib/modules/x) on Debian without a ROOT access?

Hello,

Once gcc, bc, libssl-dev, tar and mkinitramfs-tools are installed you are in principle ready to compile your own custom kernel.

However I notice here always the tendency to use root access for compiling.

Is there on DEBIAN an official method for compiling the modern 4.x kernel (bzImage, initrd.img, /lib/modules/x) on Debian without a ROOT access?

Best regards,
Patrick

Fakeroot:
https://wiki.debian.org/FakeRoot
https://debian-handbook.info/browse/...cadre.fakeroot

Edit:
As for building Debian specific kernel-packages, do note that the old way ("fakeroot make-kpkg --initrd [...]") is considered decapitated in favor of "make deb-pkg" (though I personally use both).

Old way:
https://debian-handbook.info/browse/...mpilation.html

Modern way (starting from Jessie):
https://debian-handbook.info/browse/...mpilation.html

More complete instruction (if needed):
http://kernel-handbook.alioth.debian.org/

i have never noticed that tendency, for compiling in general.
quite the opposite actually (warning: do not run make as root).
but maybe it's different for kernel compiling?
