Can't "stat source package list"

recently installed debian mepis -

every time I do anything related to apt-get (install, update, upgrade) I get the following or similar related error message

Code:
Failed to fetch ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/linux/deve...86/Packages.gz Unable to fetch file, server said '/pub/linux/devel/lang/java/blackdown.org/debian/dists/unstable/main/binary-i386/Packages.gz: No such file or directory '
Reading Package Lists... Done
W: Couldn't stat source package list ftp://metalab.unc.edu unstable/main Packages (/var/lib/apt/lists/metalab.unc.edu_pub_linux_devel_lang_java_blackdown.org_debian_dists_unstable_main_binary-i386_Packages) - stat (2 No such file or directory)

W: You may want to run apt-get update to correct these problems
E: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
I know I could just # the offending entries out in /etc/sources.list but is there a better way of fixing this problem?

It seems like the blackdown java packages aren't there. The problem would be fixed by replacing that source with one that does have the packages. It seems it is a problem with that source and not on your end.

thanks, much as I thought. I wonder what was stored there and what would be a suitable replacement if any is required.

You can go to: http://apt-get.org/ and look for unofficial sources for things that are not available in standard debian.

For java, I just installed after downloading directly from Sun rather than using apt-get.
