Unhappy can't run startx

I just installed Debian 3.0 and tried running startx, but I got this error:

/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/Xinit/xserverrc: /usr/bin/x11/x: No such file or directory

I have a GeForce-2 MX card with 32 megs of ram, and I ran XF86Config to configure everything.

Does anyone know what I need to do to get X to run?
Thanks in advance for any help,
Avi

are you sure that you have x-window-system installed

if not try
Code:
apt-get install x-window-system
if it returns that the latest version is already installed then that is not your problem. did you install using all of the disc's?? if you remember all of the steps that you took on installation then you can compare what you did with this http://www.osnews.com/story.php?news_id=2016 and see if you missed a step on the config side.

I think that you don't have a proper X window system installed. For a newbie it's difficult to get the X up and running by apt tools alone. I suggest you to use tasksel to get your X installed.

i personally would not recommend using tasksel or deselect. i know for me (after a year of switching between mdk and RH and libranet and slack and so on.......... i was still stumped on installing debian and getting x to run until i read the very verbose debian install listed in my sig. that is why it is in my sig so that others can learn how to install deb until they get the hang of apt-get and such.

like my last suggestion i would read thru the walkthru listed above and in my sig and see if there is anything that is listed that you don't remember doing.

Thanks for all the responses. I ended up going to the debian irc channel and they helped me set it up. The main problem was that I hadn't installed the xserver.

thanks for the fix responce. it is nice to see when someone is able to fix a prob and then posts the fix. this way someone that might have the same problem can see your fix and try it.
