broken xwindow/gnome question

Hi, I am runnig Debian/Sarge on an intel 550 mhz machine, has been doing pretty well, but after an apt-get dist-upgrade, something happened to my windows manager... i could not see the mazx/min/close buttons on the top of the screen. after playing around for a whle, I found that if I ran metacity, it fixed the problem until my next login... any ideas as to what is going on?

sounds like metacity is not getting loaded on login. Not sure why, or how to fix it. Sorry I can't be more help.
