bootup error :(

hey guys whats up.. i just tried the new sarge installer (net install) on my test PC.. and everything went great.. i installed the grub bootloader also..

this is the issue iam having..

i created a custom kernel and installed it properly.. and i select it in the grub bootloader and i get this error upon bootup..

VFS: Cannot open root device "hda2" or unknown-block (0,0)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block (0,0)

anyone have any ideas?

Here is mine. You need the root=/dev/hda2 on the line containing the new kernel.

title Debian GNU/Linux, kernel 2.6.8-1-386
root (hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.8-1-386 root=/dev/hda2 ro
initrd /initrd.img-2.6.8-1-386
savedefault
boot

ya i checked in my /boot/grub/menu.list... i have all of that.. its odd.. the kernel i installed it with was the 2.4.27 but then i downloaded 2.6.7 to create my own custom kernel.. everything went well.. it looks properly configured in the grub bootloader

the only thing between the new kernel and the old kernel is the new kernel has the /boot/initrd.img-2.4.27-686 and the new one never came with that..

so the grub menu.list looks like this...

title Debian GNU/Linux, Kernel 2.6.7
root (hd0,1)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.7 root=dev/hda2 ro
save default
boot

title Debian GNU/Linux, Kernel 2.4.27-1-686
root (hd0,1)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz- 2.4.27-1-686 root=dev/hda2 ro
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.4.27-1-686
save default
boot

the old kernel that was installed with the system boots.. but not my new one

from what i hear in some forums.. it may be a bug in the new sarge installer.. because i even get the same error with the lilo bootloader..

on this pc i used the woody installer and i have no issues at all with new kernels and stuff

any other ideas?

did you compile the new kernel with the root filesystem compiled in, not as a module? if not you either need to compile it in, or make an initrd.img for the root filesystem, I think.
