Backing up Linux essentials

Hi all

Newbie question - what are the essential files to back up to make sure that I do not lose my configurations in the event of a hard disk failure or worse (what is worse???). I have Partimaged hda1, and seperately backed up the kernel, but I want to quickly backup config files, iprules/tables etc etc using tar/gzip. What would interest me heaps is a script that would automatically run a backup, something that I could run whenever I have a play (probably best to run it *before* I have a play!)

Does this make sense? After so much work has been put into this machine to make it work I find it real scary that there is nothing in place to protect the investment, so to speak...

cheers...pix

/home /boot /root/ /var /etc

tar clfvz - /home > /home.tgz

do that for each of the directories, then burn them to
a cdrom
