A question about bootsplash!!

Hi folks

I have a question about installing the bootsplash in my Debian Sarge (2.4.27). I've installed using apt and it worked well, the questions is: What else I have to do to install the bootsplash?

Thanks

Here's a How-To: Jazz Up Your Debian Boot
However, you must use a 2.6 kernel series for that to work.

I thought I could install it in a 2.4 kernel, so forget it, I am happy with my 2.4 kernel.

Thanks Xian

You can also try Splashy
It's much easier to install than bootsplash.

Hi Ruben I've tried to install splashy and took a look in howto's to configure it. The installation worked well, but all the documets I could find explain how to configure the GRUB bootloader and not the LILO.

Can you help me with this trouble?? What I have to change in lilo.conf file???

Thank you very much!!

You should try and at least read the Splashy docs
/usr/share/doc/splashy/README

Reading docs should be the FIRST place to look.

But since you don't...

OK, I agree with you that first of all We have to take a look at the docs before insert a new thread, but believe me, that's what I do!!

I could see the links that you put in your post Xian and there is one thing that I couldn't understand, in the site Splashy FAQ's explains that is not possible to use splashy in 2.4 kernel??? Is it right?? if not, I've installed it and just put these lines in my lilo.conf:

append="quiet"
vga=791

What else I have to do???

Thanks

That is correct.
Splashy will not work on a 2.4 kernel series.

Good Night
You don't have to reinstall Debian to use a newer kernel, installing kernels on Debian is very very easy: you just have to choose the kernel that's the best for you and than you can install it using apt-get, aptitude, dselect, synaptics or wathever way you prefer.
The kernel you should choose is very easy to find, if you want version 2.6 there are several packages (kernel versions) to choose from. I'll list here the most common:

kernel-image-2.6-686 -> This one is optimized for use with intel pentium or celeron processors
kernel-image-2.6-k7 -> This one is optimized for use with AMD Athlon/Duron processors
kernel-image-2.6-386 -> This one is not optimized, it's installed by default (if you chooose to install 2.6 at the Debian Install) it runs on all 386 based processors (AMD Athlon/Duron/Sempron, Intel Pentium/Celeron processors (and maybe more I have to say I don't know that))

So you can just do apt-get install the-kernel-image-you-chose and it'll install the kernel for you automaticly. It's also added to Grub by default and there is some script for Lilo if I remember correctly (I don't use lilo myself)
So good luck

Ruben

Thumbs up

Excellent!!!

I'm very glad with your post Mr. Ruben!! Do you want to know why?? so take a look in my uname -r:

2.6.15-1-k7

I installed the image that you said (kernel-image-2.6-k7, I have an Athlon XP 2.7) and just added some lines in my lilo.conf file, rebooted my machine and started the new kernel (with splashy hehe) this worked very, very well!! Thanks
