a problem of using cups

I am using debian 3.0 woody with kernel 2.4.18.
I installed cups by
Code:
apt-get install cups
and downloaded hp4050.ppd, -- the ps driver for the networking printer in my office, and saved it in /usr/share/cups/model/.
After restarted cups by
Code:
/etc/init.d/cups restart
I used http://localhost:631/admin to add and configure the printer (I named the printer eg. hpg15), and printed the test page very well.
But when I inputed command
Code:
lpr -Phpg15 /etc/motd
the system always said "unknown printer name".

Please help!

*The networking printer is working if I modify /etc/printcap manually. But I don't think the cups being used in this case.*

You need foomatic and ghostscript in addition to CUPS, check that you have those installed. I haven't set up CUPS in Woody, but in Sarge you can install CUPS, foomatic, and ghostscript with a single command:

aptitude -r install foomatic-bin

To troubleshoot CUPS, change the LogLevel in /etc/cups/cupsd.conf from info to debug. Then restart the print server, try to print something, and check out the error messages in /var/log/cups/error_log .

Oh, and manually editing /etc/printcap will do you little good because CUPS will overwrite this file every time you use CUPS.

I found the reason. That is I didn't install cupsys-bsd. I only installed cupsys.

Most CUPS problems seem to be caused by a missing package that you need to install. Debian really needs a meta-package that installs all the packages that you need to run CUPS successfully. "aptitude -r install foomatic-bin" ("aptitude -r install foomatic-bin cupsys-driver-gimpprint" for Epson printers) has always worked for me but one day I'll prepare a full list of all the necessary packages.
