C compiler install & configuration

I have DSL.93 installed and running in a vmware machine. It is awesome and will install it direct on it's on system someday - if I can get it working right, and figure out how to use it.

Problem #1 - I know nothing about Linux/Unix ,file editing, or programing.

Problem #2 - I need to install vmware tools on the system for shares between DSL and the host OS.

To install vmware tools I need the "make" command to work, but it is not installed.

I am assuming it is part of tcc or gcc. The DSL page recommends tcc. So I have downloaded tcc.9.22 - un-tared it using "tar zxf /root/tcc-0.9.22.tar.gz"

I am loged on as root and have tried it after typing "su" but I get the same errors each way.

root@box:~/tcc-0.9.22# su
root@box:~/tcc-0.9.22# ./configure
big/little test failed
Binary directory /usr/local/bin
Library directory /usr/local/lib
Include directory /usr/local/include
Manual directory /usr/local/man
Doc directory /usr/local/share/doc/tcc
Source path /root/tcc-0.9.22
C compiler gcc
make make
CPU x86
Big Endian no
gprof enabled no
Creating config.mak and config.h

in the formss someone sugested adding "/usr" to the path for the user and moving it into the home directory of the userr. I tried that in "/root" but still had the same problem.

all those directories do exsist.

I am trying to download a pre-compiled version of gcc right noww - but it is 130MB, and kind of defeats the purpose of DamnSmallLinux

You're trying to compile a compiler. If you can't compile anything else, compiling this won't work either.

tcc is already included in DSL. How it works i don't know, since I do all my compiling on a different system. It may require setting the CC variable to tcc and still needing to add make. (notice the configure script lists gcc and make, neither of which is in DSL)

Another option is to download the gcc1.dsl extension and use that instead.

Probably means the CC variable in the configure script.
Open the script and you should see a line something like this:
CC=something

make sure it reads "CC=gcc"
